Pip-boy cosplay prop (Not started)

Post by Rippedshadow » Mon Nov 07, 2011 11:27 pm

I've been eyeing a cast lately, and finally decided to buy and start this project. I'll update this with more information later, but for now, I'll just leave this open for discussion.

That actually sounds pretty cool. I've been considering building one based around an Android HD2 for a while now. It would be in Pipbuck mode though :)

I plan on using some parts from stuff and making a fully functional, stand alone internals using a "rasberry pi" motherboard. It's a linux based MB about the size of a credit card.

I'm still ironing stuff out, so. :I

I was thinking all you need to do a working pipbuck is a bid of coding in an iPhone. They are a real-life pipboy for all practical intents and purposes.

Even though I'm not a fan of Apple products, I will admit using a iTouch would be the easiest way to make one. Though you might have to jailbreak it to get the full pontential out of it.

An iPhone may be faster... But really now, it'd be a helluvalot more impressive to say "I built the electronics for this and wired it myself. It can read my freakin pulse, what can yours do? Play music? Yea, I can do that, and everything else."

Yea I've seen some built from scratch ones, that were built from the ground up. Only problem is all the ones I've seen for these can't be worn, due to the electronics not being small enough. But if you think you can do, I so want one.

At the moment, it's 90% concept, but assuming I can find a screen to hook up the the RP motherboard, and there's room for buttons and dials, all's fair game after that. The cast is going to cost me upwards $70 though, and I'd still have to sand it down and soder different spots. HOWEVER. A friend of mine said she's willing to make copies of the cast, so if I wanted I could make more of these...

But after the initial one... Let's just say if someone wants it, it will be extremely expensive hardware. The motherboard is a cheap $25, but everything else beyond buttons and dials is up in the air.

If I had to guesstimate? $300+ per unit, completed.

If you can make it do what you want it to do, I would so pay that.
