Um First?
At the risk of getting lynched, but this forum looked so empty!

Re: Um First?
So, I presume this is now the "general random discussion about write-y stuff"!
xD
Anyhow.
I'm tinkering around with a few characters and settings for a possible fic, and I'm wondering.... What tagged skills do you think would fit well with a Steel Ranger initiate?
No "big weapons", because that comes later.
Also, "repair", "guns" and "science" will all be covered by the main character, so that's not neccesary.

Re: Um First?
I'd go with Energy weapons over all, medicine and science for a scribe or sneak and survival for a knight (as the knight initiates tend to be used for scouting missions).
Re: Um First?
I won't be giving her energy weapons, so that one is kinda useless. She's starting out with an assault rifle, but her main weapon (once she gets her power armor) will be a minigun. I will perk-tag a fourth skill then; namely, Big Guns. Of course, I won't actually mention that to the readers, but it'll happen.Kashin wrote:I'd go with Energy weapons over all, medicine and science for a scribe or sneak and survival for a knight (as the knight initiates tend to be used for scouting missions).
Survival was a good one, I think I'll use that. Sneak is kinda useless for a knight in Power Armor though, and I'm not sure if I'm going to use it anyway.

Science is already covered, but medicine... But no. Don't want that. Both Velvet and Glory have medicine, and both of those are the first love-interest the main character of their respective stories have. I don't want to repeat that.
Explosives, maybe?
Hmm. Yeaaah. That'd fit.
Especially since I'm planning for my character (codenamed "Gears" for now) to have a slight phobia of explosives. I'm just not quite sure how to do it yet. Originally I planned to blow her right leg away with a landmine very early, but I changed it so now I can't have that personality trait early on. And, originally I wanted her to have a robotic leg, but I kind of changed my desicion, so now I probably won't blow her leg off either, so the phobia is kinda out of the question.
Hurr.
Fuck you personalities, for needing a reason -.- xD

Re: Um First?
Well.. If you remove weapons skills (you don't want Unarmed or Melee combat, do you ? :p), Medicine, Sneak, Science and Repair..
Barter, Lockpick, Speech, Survival, (Explosives)
She could barter with some explosives (don't know if it's really "Barter" though. '^^)

Re: Um First?
She could have had a bad experience with cherry bombs as a foal, but nothing so bad as to remove a limb. Perhaps a relatively minor de-hairing and burn of a foreleg. As a foal, it would seem a lot worse than it was, and trust me, even small burns can hurt like crazy. I've come into contact with the wrong end of soldering irons enough to know!

Re: Um First?
Maybe. I think it might start out as a minor thing, like simply disliking explosives a lot. Then, after a few near-death experiences and simalar, it'll evolve.otherunicorn wrote:She could have had a bad experience with cherry bombs as a foal, but nothing so bad as to remove a limb. Since the Initiate (I don't even have a codename for her yet) keeps loads of explosives around, Gears will get nervous.
Dunno how it'll work out yet though. Any ideas?
Infact, does anyone have any ideas at all they want to say? I love hearing other peoples opinion xD
Hm.
I seem to have hijacked this thread.
Guys, should each of us make our own thread for the separate stories, or should we keep on stuffing everything in here? It's best to take that question now, before we have to deal with separating all the info.
Oh, and someone has to move all the list-posts into this forum.
Which reminds me, I need to go claim a Stable....

Re: Um First?
I would go with a thread per story for ideas and one per story for feedback, but that's just me.
For the name, this might be useful (whipped it together for Flankorage)

On your tag skill conundrum, might I recommend a system that I find helps with character depth. I tend to think of the tags as; A background/hobby tag (I will be using Fluttershy as a crude example. Her background tag would be stealth; as her timid nature and constant bullying would make her skilled at not being noticed [she also has a habit on ninjaing into scenes]), A special talent tag (Fluttershy would have speech for her natural skill at reassurance and intimidation), and a job tag (while she had a natural ability to communicate with animals, her veterinary skills were probably developed as her job required them).
I do have a few ideas for the twist of your stable, but am wondering if you want people to PM you with ideas or have the discussion here at the risk of spoilers?

That tag system is awesome! I'm totaly going to use that xDKashin wrote:I would go with a thread per story for ideas and one per story for feedback, but that's just me.

And, it reminded me, that I haven't actually figured out the cutie mark of Initiate yet. I am ashamed of myself. xD
IMO, it's okay to discuss ideas here. After all, it's not technically written yet, so technically there is nothing to spoil.
Though, if/when I start writing I will start putting spoilertags on stuff that requires it.
