hi hi

While I haven't seen characters from everyone yet, I have seen some characters, so I think that unless there are some serious objections, we can start tomorrow. (Friday, February 10th, 8:00PM Central) People who don't have characters ready still have some time to work on them before then, otherwise I have the means to add people into the game when they're ready. But I'd still much prefer it if people got them in before hand.

Making characters shouldn't be too difficult. Just throw some SPECIAL stats around, pick a special talent and a couple tagged skills, and I can help walk people through coming up with a magic spell and equipment if anyone needs some help with that.

I've got a character idea that I'd love to try -- a character that I hope will both test the new system and make for a fun RP experience -- but I need to conference with Icekatze to make sure the character can be realized within the ruleset and won't be problematic for the GM.

hi hi

Oh one last thing. I drew this a while back because I wanted to see if I could make a lady buffalo. Not a FO:E universe picture, but maybe it will help inspire the look of Thunderbird in some manner? Just a thought.

I'm insane for staying up to work on this, but my muse wouldn't let me sleep. :pipshrug:
Spoiler: show
Character Name: Thunderbird Screams Through Modems
Character Race: Buffalo
Character Archetype: Techno-shaman (Magic Mechanic)

Important Character Traits:
• "Thunderbird sings a lament for lost glory that once reached to the stars, but she also sings of a hope to rebuild. I dream of making that hope come to life."
• While not strong or brilliant and sometimes spacy, when she looks at you, even briefly, she gives the impression of REALLY seeing you.
• "I know you can't hear it, but your gun's spirit is begging to be cleaned and oiled. Would you like some help with that?"
• A bit of a dreamer, she is willing to fight but prefers to avoid it. Fighting hurts lives and equipment - think of the equipment!

Important Moments in her Past:
• Her grandfather was the assistant chief medic for Stable 34's night shift, and when she was only seven, he passed away. Her parents were reluctant to plainly say he died, instead telling her he gone on a long journey to a better place. She shook her head in confusion answering that no he hadn't gone yet; he was standing right behind them and smiling. Didn't they hear him telling them not to be sad? From that point on, they knew she was going to be practicing a very different kind of medicine.

• Built into the side of a mountain in the range walling off Hoofington from most of the rest of Equestria, Stable 34 was a highly diverse and extremely egalitarian group with members of nearly every race save dragons and diamond dogs. No race was held higher than any other, and all beliefs were mandated as equal so long as personal rights were protected. Despite this leading to a rather loose moral code regarding recreational activities (sometimes jokingly referred to as the First Rule of 34), it was actually a rather successful Stable on the whole. That might have continued if not for the Church of Radiance gaining strength in the Stable.

A few of the night shift engineers became members of the Church and started performing rituals within the main power plant's chamber to enhance the output due to winter heating issues. Thunderbird was a junior assistant to an older buffalo who was the chief of the day shift maintenance team. He began to notice irregularities in the reactor, so they performed a ritual to stabilize it. The night shift came on and saw that the changes they made had reverted, so they performed a new ritual. Fearing something terribly wrong, the day shift followed up with a more powerful ritual and set a ward. Not recognizing the ward for what it was, the night shift broke it and tried to supercharge the reactor.

Realizing that their ward couldn't have broken on its own, the buffaloes brought the matter to the attention of the Overbeing who informed them that she was just reviewing a similar report from the night shift. Tempers flared, hooves and talons were pointed, words were thrown around, and meanwhile no one was fixing the reactor. Now the donkey in charge of the Stable was well loved by nearly all, and she always tried to keep the peace, so when the argument turned into a religious clash, she put her hoof down and declared that by the Stable's charter, no religion could be favored over any other, so all further rituals in the main power plant chamber were to cease.

Her timing could not have been worse because at that moment Thunderbird was leading another buffalo, three griffins, and two ponies through a ritual to try and stave off a cascade failure caused by the conflicting magics. Already the primary transformer had blown and the cooling system was making plaintive sounds. A more experienced group of techs might have been able to fix it without magic, but those techs were busy arguing when Security came to stop their ritual. Realizing what was about to happen, the griffins broke off to delay security while Thunderbird adjusted what she was doing to save as much as she could with what little time she had. The group had just been dragged out of the power plant chamber in chains when the plant blew injuring two guards and a maintenance unicorn.

Her final actions had thrown a protective ward between the main power plant and all secondary systems including the backup power plant, so the Stable continued to run, but many systems were reduced to emergency levels including heating. Residents in the upper floors complained of the now chilly air, no one liked how many halls were limited to emergency lighting, none of the recreational facilities had power for anything but lights, and the backup power plant was strained enough that it probably wouldn't last more than a year under its current load. As the one leading the ritual, blame was placed on Thunderbird for performing 'personal rites of religious significance while on duty', so she was given the choice of rotting in a jail cell until the Stable was unlivable or going out and trying to find some way to fix their power problem.

Personal Attachments:
• Spot, a custom laser pistol modified to be usable for welding (uses 1 shot per minute)
• A syrinx (panflute) that was owned by her mother and her mother before her and her mother before her and her mother before her and her mother before...zZZZzzzz...
• The first five books of the third Roam Swift series by Apple Tons - notable because this series is the only one to feature a buffalo as one of the main cast. Surviving copies are harder than most pre-war books to find due to them being expunged by the MoI for scenes depicting an evil clone of Luna and some (but not all) zebra antagonists being portrayed in a sympathetic light. The books she owns are Castle in the Sky, The Perilous Planet, Voices of the Stars, War in the Heavens, and The Bastion Beyond. She still hopes to find Deep Space Distress, Starship Second Chance, Cracks in Chaos, Prison of the Windigos, Force Unbalanced, and Nightmare's Home, preferably in that order since they're a serial.

hi hi

That is an excellent character summary and backstory. :) I'm wondering, would you like your starting spell to be some sort of a powering/maintenance ritual? I think the other members of the party would still be able to help out with it.

Edit: Also, spirit rules are in place, though a few of the specifics need to be hammered out. They're essentially playable now. Little spirits are handled like the "come to life" spell, while spirits with personalities that characters can interact with have their own little rules for how they take damage and grow/fade.

hi hi

So, after a weekend on strike, my brain finally decided it would start working again on fixing magic. I crunched some numbers of a scrap of paper while I was batch processing and uploading photos today at work, and I think I've got a reasonable way to make magic work more smoothly.

Also: I have a log of the second session for people to look at. The first hour or so got cut off for some reason though. I need to figure out how to get logs to work more reliably. :/

Here's the logs for the day, sorry it has colour codes and stuff in it. I added logs for Dice too if you need them. I have logs of any channel I'm in 99% of the time, always feel free to ask :)
