actually, it worked like this: first of all, the guns have both rails and coils, that shouldn't work but hey, it's solaris and there's magic involved, so.... ah.... it was unlikely to work, not impossible

what happened to the satellites: the first group that exploded at the first salvo, had a major malfunctioning with the recoil compensation reactors, that simply exploded with all the satelite when activated; another group of satellites didn't activate the recoil system and was sent to the moon andbeyond; the other satellites met the last design flaw: the joints connrcting the guns to the satellites were too weak and broke, sending the guns spinning in one direction and thesatellite in the other one, or breaking the satellite in two like a big kraphen.

it was all that i had in mind, if something doesn't work, well... it's in space, it won't rain on the story again, so... to be honest i don't care =P

Hehe.
I am pretty damn sure gauss weapons don't have a recoil at all xD
And while having both rails and coils could work, I don't know how the magnetic fields would react to eachother. It might have made the weapon worse. *shrug*

I think we'll just call "Artistic licence: Physics" and move on xD

i'm not sure about gauss, but railguns should have a hell of a recoil, anyhow anything can go wrong on a 200 years old satellite built by those idiots at solaris... if it's not the recoil is the magnetic field working unproperly and shooting the rails instead of the rod, or simply collapsing on themselves, really. I mean, those egg heads launched into orbit a weapon that dischargen all of iit's ammos in ten shots...

anyhow the schapter has been edited by uSea, now the english should be a little less bad, I hope

Newton's third law of motion. If there's a slug going one way, the weapon must go the other, unless something of identical mass is launched in the opposite direction at the same time. The platform would not take off at the same speed as the slug, due to its bigger mass, but it would definitely move, unless there were retros or similar hold its position, or move it back into place.

In some gauss weapons, the slug is magnetically levitating inside the barrel. I honestly do not know if Newtons third law is in effect in that situation.
I will look into the situation, as the good little physics student I am xD

I don't have time to read through it again right now :3
Going to bed; I need to mop up the final bit of my math paper or whatever it's named in english. After that, I have a philosophy paper, three different books and two games I have to go through.... But I'll find time for it xD

don't worry, it should be fine anyhow, i asked just to be sure ^_^

and for the phisics, well... we're talking ponies, if you check, 1800kms is not even a decent orbit range for any purpose and i'm not sure that a railgun from that position could actually burst a bunker, so.... it's all a big plot device to make puppy crack and go blue screen, showing her weakness in all it's might and how much she depends on others; as long as that is achieved, the satellite could shoot roasted chickens =P

1800km is considere low earth orbit. So yeah, htat's a pretty fine position to have a weapon in, except that (I think) it's orbit would eventually decay, bringing it crashing down on the planet below.
As for the penetrating power; aye, it'd require some more kinetic energy to compensate for the air resistance the projectile faces on the way down, but with sufficient power this isn't really a problem.
But yeah, plot device and all that xD I'm just fond of over-analyzing stuff like this xD
If I ever write something like this into a story, I am actually afraid I'll include the maths to prove how it would work xD

Frozen chickens work better.
