Real life references and inspiration

So there's a lot of neat stuff out there in the world that can be used to make FoE fanworks more exciting, cohesive, and believable. Problem is the world's a big place so finding all of it on your own's a tall order.
But I'm sure a lot of us know one or two hard-won, obscure, little facts or details that could probably be used for FoE stuff, so this thread is here for us to pool our knowledge for our mutual benefit. Stuff like firearms knowledge, medical or survival skills, technical know-how, or interesting events in history.
I've got a couple things here that would be good resources for anyone creating stuff related to ruins or Stables.
This is a good survey of a variety of abandoned buildings and complexes, including the infamous Pripyat.
The Kowloon Walled City was probably the closest thing to a Stable in real life. 33,000 people lived in a largely autonomous 0.1 square mile brick of apartment buildings. It'd totally make a good basis for a post-apocalyptic settlement too. Wikipedia has a good page for it.
Hashima was a Japanese island city and coal mine run by the Mitsubishi corporation that was abandoned and fell into complete disrepair in the 70's. Very high population density too.
The Lun ekranoplan is the most ridiculously Soviet piece of superscience I've ever seen. I'm even going to try describing it, just look at the pictures.
On that note this website is awesome if you're looking for rusted out Soviet infrastructure.
In addition to being an awesome movie, Das Boot goes into crazy detail about the technical and psychological consequences of living in a tiny cramped metal tube with way too many other people for several months. Many scenes could be applied to FoE building interiors. You can watch it on youtube.
