An attempt at a different kind of spinoff (reboot/crossover)

Post by Ranger Artyom » Sat Aug 24, 2013 7:36 am

Alright, as I mentioned in my introductory post, I had been hoping to test the waters for an idea I had-- namely a reboot fic of FO:E that instead takes Littlepip and several of the other principal characters from both the original story and MLP itself, and drops them into a ponified version of Metro: Last Light instead. The setting, obviously, would be totally different, but the characters would mostly remain the same, albeit with changes to accommodate their new backgrounds, and there'd still be lots of shout outs to Fallout and the original fic along the way. The story would begin with Last Light, with the events of 2033 being alluded to in broad strokes and elaborated upon in flashbacks, kinda like the memory orb sequences in vanilla FO:E. I've worked out most of the character equivalences so far:

-Littlepip as Artyom (obviously)
-Calamity as Anna (both trigger-happy snipers-- why not?)
-Steelhooves as Miller (both high-ranking members of a group called "Rangers", though obviously he wouldn't be a ghoul here)
-Velvet Remedy as Hunter (in flashbacks only)
-Spike/Watcher as Khan (since it's only been 20 years since the war instead of 200, he's much smaller, though still an adult)
-Homage as Pavel (I know, it seems weird to make her a "villain", but trust me, I have a good idea for a character arc here)
-Big Mac as Ulhman
-Ditzy Doo as Andrew the Blacksmith
-Monterey Jack as Bourbon (in flashbacks to the events of 2033)

However, I am still blanking on a lot of the others. For one thing, I have no idea what to do with Xenith, nor do I know how to use any of the villains. At some point, I had the notion of maybe having Red Eye as Secretary Moskvin and Autumn Leaf as General Korbut, but that seemed like a pretty flimsy analogy at best. I'm hoping some feedback can help with that.

As for location, it would take place entirely in Canterlot, which would be given an underground Metro system to accommodate the setting of the piece. Locations visited or mentioned would include Princess Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns, Twilight's former apartment, the gardens where Discord's statue used to stand, the train station seen in various episodes, the library (with Librarians, of course!), and the castle grounds themselves (the latter functioning as the equivalent location to Red Square/the Kremlin in the game-- yes, there will be ghosts), along with original locales that I have yet to fully come up with.

Also, bear in mind that I don't expect to be fully ready to post this for a while, since I'm a very busy person and have so far only completed part of the prologue. On top of that, I'm not sure if it's...like, tacky of me to make a fanfic that uses such huge swathes of someone else's cast that they created. I mean, there's already recursive fanfics of FO:E, that's a given, but so far none of them (to my knowledge) have used the cast of the original as main characters.

Well, that's encouraging at least-- thanks! ^^ Yeah, given the existence of all the recursive fanfics in general, you're probably right that she wouldn't mind too much, so long as I'm not overly mean-spirited in my portrayal of the characters or something. Which I don't plan to do, so hopefully I'm fine. XD And yeah man, you really ought to play Last Light when you get the chance, it's a pretty fun game, haha.

I'm hoping to also make greater use of major characters from the show itself than the original fic did, since the much shorter period of time between the war and the present day in my iteration gives me more room for that. I already decided to have all three Cutie Mark Crusaders turn up at various points (with Apple Bloom and Scootaloo as traveling stalkers/mercenaries, and Sweetie Belle as a singer who performs at the equivalent of Theatre Station from the game), while Applejack would have a prominent backstory with the Ranger Order so as to mirror her involvement with the Steel Rangers in vanilla FO:E.
