Taint: what do we know?

A fairly simple question, though it doesn't have a simple answer, as far as I can tell. So I'll start us off with what I know, and draw some suppositions between FO:E and PH.

1 - Taint is prevalent throughout the wasteland. When it is most obvious, it appears as a strange rainbow-colored liquid ooze.
2 - Taint causes severe, sometimes fatal magical mutation, as evidenced by the tentacled horrors.
3 - Taint was in part Twilight Sparkle's Impelled Metamorphosis Potion, (I.M.P.) which was an attempt to engineer artificial alicorns. This is also the origin of the Goddess.

And a little guesswork here based off of Project Horizons chapter 37,

- Hippocratic Research developed "Flux," a magical substance processed from gemstones and rainbow extract.
- Flux bears a physical resemblance to Taint - a rainbow liquid ooze.
- Flux causes severe mutation - something Hippocratic Research used to develop a great many peculiar creatures/products.
- Twilight Sparkle knew of Flux - perhaps it was based off of the I.M.P., or Twilight took the early concept of Flux to develop the I.M.P.?
- Because Flux was apparently used to make everything in the Hoofington area, from toasters on up, perhaps it is related to enervation?

Just throwing a few things out there. Most of this is tenuous linkage from the latest PH chapter, but I would like to know more about Taint itsself. If it was mostly from the I.M.P. project, why can it be found around the wasteland? Was it a byproduct of balefire megaspells as well? Ideas? Comments? throw in your own two bits, if you have them.

Most likely Taint is the base compound that drives both Flux and I.M.P which would be the reason the compound can be found in many places.

I highly doubt Flux causes enervation to occur. Although Somber tends to have very basic plot devices that serve multiple purposes (See Goldenblood for proof).

Finally got around to reading the newest PH chapter.
Spoiler: show
Flux is Discord.
Serves me right for trying to make sense of the wasteland I guess.
