Zebra Hybrids

Post by TheWanderingZebra » Mon Sep 30, 2013 4:00 pm

I suddenly realized something. If a character is half zebra and half pony ... can he or she be allowed to take perks from both races? Or can he only choice perks from one race?

As of right now there are no special rules for zonies. Honestly what I'd recommend is playing either and EP or zebra and merely include in your character description that he/she is a zony. You're always free to propose rules for zonies as a separate race, but there's no guarantee that they'll be accepted by all GM's.

I currently play a zebracorn in TEA group. It plays exactly as a unicorn but with social stigma. I think you'd pretty much have to pick a race to have the strongest affinity too and use only their perks.

Another possibility is to force an even spread between zebra and pony perks, so that you pick a zebra perk, you can't pick another one until you've gotten a pony perk. (possibly adding general perks into the rotation.)

And a GM would allow that?

Well, I suggested it, ergo I would probably allow it. I can only speak for myself though, I am not all GMs everywhere.

I consider zonies to have a dominant side to them. It's up to the player to choose which side that is, and to what degree it is more dominant, but having a character that can draw on two different exclusive perk sets at will could end up OP. You can take some from both, but the majority should be from one.

Same thing as when a unicorn and a pegasus have a kid, I imagine.

I.e. one or the other, not alicorn.

hi hi

Pony genetics are a pretty complicated bag of worms to begin with, to say nothing of what happens with pony and zebra genetics, as ponies and zebras are not the same species, while ponies and other ponies are. But even Fluttershy seems to have a little bit of Earth pony in her, even though her physical expression is entirely pegasus. (It was implied in the show how unusual her love of the ground was for pegasi, and mentioned in behind the scenes interviews how she was originally supposed to be an Earth pony, and how that carried over into her character.)
